Gwen Smith’s Reflections on Lent

  • March 4, 2021

Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter when we intentionally check in with our hearts and souls and how that aligns with God’s will for our lives.

Today there is a greater emphasis placed on adding something during Lent either instead of or in addition to the more traditional giving something up. I recently came across a new tool called, “The Doodle Prayer”. This simple exercise has a meditative quality that will appeal to both adults and children.

Very Simply:

  1. On a blank piece of paper, write the names of the people you want to pray for.
  2. Using colorful pens/markers, “Doodle” around these names. It’s not about the finished product as much as it is about engaging and focusing our minds on prayer.
  3. And finally, touch each of your colorful prayers and lift them up to God.

During this Lenten Season, Pastor Keenan is preaching on the Seven Last Words of Jesus from the cross. Jesus’ 5th word was “I thirst”. Each of us are “thirsty” for something. We all need spiritual refreshment which can only be gotten through prayer and some quiet time with God on a daily basis.

This Lent, try a new way of praying that feels fresh and new. Prayer will quench your thirst for God. I especially like how Christian Author and speaker Matthew Kelly put it, “Dig the well before you get thirsty.”
